My mom, My hero

My Mom, My Hero

The injury I had received when I was brought into this world must have also brought much sadness to my family.  It was my mom who immediately took responsibility for my every comfort and need.  She continues to do so to this very day

Doctors told my parents that I would never be able to eat, that would be impossible for me to chew and swallow.  My mom put my food in a little fine-mesh pouch.  This taught me how to chew the food into pieces and suck through the tiny holes and swallow carefully.  My mom built my first walker.     She built me a flouter and with it I learned to swim.  When I developed a love for power soccer, she custom built my guard onto my wheelchair.  We haven’t missed a practice and my family is able to travel all over the country for my tournaments.  With mom, I am shooting for tournaments around the world!

Psychologist and other “professionals” said that I would be dumb and always behind kids my age.  My mom has a sharp mind; of course I would too!  I am in all pre-advance classes at my school.  My mom gives in other ways too.  She has volunteered at my school and in our community as long as I can remember.

My mom wasn’t going to let my brain injury limit any of our lives.  I am an ordinary kid with an extraordinary life.  I am inspired to push myself where ever I can.  I owe all of this to my hero-my mom.  Thank you for all that you are and all that you have done.

Hero Essay about Elio
Posted January 19, 2008 12:00 AM

Every year in middle school we have to rite a hero essay about someone we know.  Last year I rote about my mom, this year I rote about Elio.  I put it in a frame and sent it to him.  I got 2nd place for this

.

.

Elio, a Hero for All

I have only known Elio since August, but he is responsible for giving me more hope and inspiration that I have had all year.

I met him at the first ever National Power Soccer Camp that I helped organize.  Power Soccer is played in power wheelchairs by people who use power wheelchairs in their everyday life.  He is the captain of the US Para-Olympic team and they attended this camp as their last practice session before competition for the World Cup in Tokyo this last October (They won it by the way!!) and to mentor the campers.  He gets to play power soccer all over the world and I’m going to do that very thing.

I’ve been ordering soccer balls and other equipment on online for years.  I discovered at this camp that he is the owner of the Power Soccer equipment company.  He is an intelligent, independent man, living in a wheelchair, with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), who is also a successful business owner.  I’m going to do that very thing.

His wife, Jesse, is an assistant Power Soccer coach and certified referee and travels with him. They have given me hope that I too can have a family of my own someday.

Elio is responsible for giving me a new and positive outlook on my life.  He focused on his abilities and earned my respect.  I look up to him and will strive to be like him in every way that I can.
