Cruisin' the Caribbean
Posted February 23, 2008 12:00 AM

My family recently went on a cruise via Royal Caribbean's Jewel of the Seas to the Eastern Caribbean. I highly recommend considering a cruise for your next vacation, if you are looking for something accessible and relaxing. Jessi and I took some video of our cruise and did an interview with RC's Disability Services Director, so stay tuned for that on xAble.com. Bottom line, the best bang for your buck is a cruise!

San Francisco is a must visit!!
Posted April 28, 2007 12:00 AM

Let me make this very clear...San Francisco rocks!!! This city is beyond picturesque. It is also very very accessible. There are many buildings with automatic opening door buttons. The subway (BART) is completely wheelchair accessible (as is some of their Trolleys). Many of the buidlings and restraurants have ramps or lifts to get in them, but some do not. My wife and I rented a wheelchair accessible van from Wheelchair Getaways and took our own tour around town. This also allowed us to easily make the trip over the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausilito. We also drove down Lombard Street two times, this is the road that has 9 sharp hairpin turns...but yes! it is doable in a wheelchair van. We went to the top of Coit Tower which gives you the best view of the entire city including the awesome TransAmerica building. As I alluded to already, the wheelchair van made it up and down all of the sharp hills and turns of the 'Frisco city streets (so no worries there). Pier 39 is cool, but a bit touristy. Downtown is really cool, but a bit busy and bustling. The parks are gorgeous and the views of the Pacific ocean are beyond memorable. We stayed in an accessible hotel called the Miyako Hotel in Japantown which was quiet, but still in the middle of town giving us easy access to everything. I highly highly recommend you visit this city once in your lifetime and experience all of its wonderful culture, food, music, and sights.

Have a Happy Holiday Season!!
Posted December 25, 2006 12:00 AM
To everyone in the xAble community and beyond... I wish you the Happiest Holiday Season!!!

This year was a special one for the Navarro household as we celebrated both Christmas and Hanukkah with several families that we love. We celebrated nearly every night of Hanukkah with a family that had never experienced it before or had shared it with us last year. My wife, who is Jewish, made latkes (delicious potato pancakes) with sour cream and apple sauce and her mother, Candi, made a traditional chicken and noodle dish that was also delicious. We played the dreidel game and read Hebrew prayers. Pretty cool stuff.

Then my family celebrated Christmas with a beautiful tree that we hand-picked (it was still perfect despite a couple of goofy bald spots, lol). We invited my brother and his family and Jessi's parents over for a traditional Noche Buena dinner on Christmas Eve. We ate way too much food as always. We then finished Christmas on the 25th at my brother's house with more good food! Needless to say, I wish everyone the best of recoveries as the food settles and we start making our 2007 new year's resolutions.

Have a wonderful holiday week and happy new year,
Elio
