Description

Diabetes is definitely a disease that most people can relate to. If not yourself, you probably know a family member, close friend, or co-worker with this disease. According to the American Diabetes Association, 1 in 3 Americans have diabetes.

For those of you that don't know, diabetes is a syndrome characterized by disordered metabolism and inappropriately high blood sugar (hyperglycaemia) resulting from either low levels of the hormone insulin or from abnormal resistance to insulin's effects coupled with inadequate levels of insulin secretion to compensate. The characteristic symptoms are excessive urine production (polyuria), excessive thirst and increased fluid intake (polydipsia), and blurred vision; these symptoms may be absent if the blood sugar is mildly elevated.  (source: Wikipedia)

As a diabetic myself, along with many diabetic family members and my late mother Barbara (diabetes complications), I welcome you to the xAble Diabetic Awareness Group.

To those of you who are young and just starting out with diabetis please listen when people tell you how important it is to keep it under control. I have been a diabetic for 35 yrs. and can speak from experience on the effects that not being able to monitor it can have. When I found out, I didn't have a glucose meter to be able to watch on a daily basis. I had to have laser surgery on my eyes in my 20's,did dialysis and had a kidney transplant, had a heart attack in my early 40's,had cataract surgery in both eyes and now am fighting off glaucoma. All of these were caused by my diabetis. I truly think if I could have kept a better eye on my levels in the beginning some of this could have been prevented or at least taken longer to come about. So please take the time to check your blood at least twice daily I wish that I could have.
