Overview:

Janice Y. Jackson, MS is the Creator and Executive Director of Women Embracing Abilities Now (W.E.A.N.) She is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of Baltimore, teaching psychology to graduate and undergraduate students.

For the first 24 years of Ms. Jackson’s life, she lived as a beautiful abled-bodied woman. After being hit by a car in 1984, she now lives as a woman with a disABILITY and lives her life from a wheelchair. From the beginning of her new life she knew that she was called to give back to the women who would come after her. She has spent 23 years breaking down the negative stereotypes and has put a new face on women with disABILITY. Her vision is to instill in every woman living with a disABILITY that they are women first, and their disABILITIES are just a part of who they are.

Ms. Jackson’s program W.E.A.N. is a mentoring program servicing women with varying degrees of disABILITIES. The mission of W.E.A.N. is to "wean" women with new disABILITIES from having their limitations be their focal point, thus having them living "with" their ABILITIES. W.E.A.N. also seeks to empower and enable women with disABILITIES to become more productive by creating one-on-one mentoring relationships between women with "New" disABILITIES and women who have been living successfully with their disABILITIES. This program also serves as a dynamic sisterhood for all women with disABILITIES.  As well as serving as a support system, the program puts on great social events in the community such as, Queens for a Day, Project Bags of Hope, Game night, Bake Sales, Pizza socials, and other events

The W.E.A.N. program is very active in the communities of Baltimore, and has created wonderful partnerships with great organizations such as, Making Choices for Independent Living ( MCIL), Kernan Rehabilitation Hospital, and the University of Maryland’s Shock Trauma.

How has your disability changed your life...for better or worse?:

I have had my disABILITY for 23 years and it is just a part of who I am. My disABILITY does not define who I am as a woman. I have a wonderful life with my limitations.

How have you overcome obstacles?:

Through my Faith, Family, Friends. MY WHOLE SUPPORT SYSTEM

What is your most embarrassing moment?: Being dropped in my wheelchair in front of 5 handsome men.
What is your most triumphant moment?:

I have had so many triumphant moments.

  • Becoming a Professor at the University of Baltimore
  • Being crowned Ms. Wheelchair Maryland
  • Creating my own non-profit organization

What are your dreams...for yourself and your peers?:

My # 1 dream is to be a nation-wide empowerer of women with disABILITIES.

I dream that every woman with a disABILITY realize that she is a woman first and that her limitations are just a part of who she is. She is a "QUEEN"
