Disability Name: T3/T4 Paraplegic
Disability Description: Burst fracture of the T4 vertebrae with kyphotic deformity of spine due to a Motor Vehicle Accident September 30, 2007. After months of immobilization in the hospital no movement or sensation returned to lower extremities so doctors diagnosed permanent paraplegia.
Assistive Technology: Wheelchair - Power (Electric), Wheelchair - Manual
Medications: Heparin, Baclofen
How has your disability changed your life...for better or worse?: Been too recent out of the hospital to tell. Accident happened almost a year ago but been in stasis of sorts since then. Been home for the last 2mths so coming back to redovcnv reality slowly but surely since then. Definitely been tough not being independent and patience has definitely been an issue. Although it seems for the worse, I am sure in the end it will turn out that this accident will be a good thing as it will and continues to force me to see how people live on wheels and so what I can to help those have the rights they (now I have to say we ) deserve.
How have you overcome obstacles?: Still overcoming obstacles by taking a deep calming breath, stepping away from the situation and reassessing the facts again. Many times emotions make us make too hasty a decision, if we take a breath and look again...most times the answers are right there infront of us
What is your most embarrassing moment?: Haven't had one yet. After loosing all privacy in the hospital and having no form of control.....I don't get embarrassed easily anymore.
What is your most triumphant moment?: To date....powering up by driveway three times last week and not passing out from exhaustion.
What are your dreams...for yourself and your peers?: To achieve whatever it is our heart truly desires!!
